Age to operate lowered to 16

SALUDA — Saluda golf cart permit holders have a little more flexibility and lower permit fees after the initial inspection, thanks to the city amending its ordinance to more closely match the state’s regulations.

The Saluda City Council met Monday, and unanimously approved amendments to its ordinance, including allowing gas or electric golf carts, lowering the age to operate from 18 years old to 16 years old with a valid license and shaving $25 off the registration fee beginning the second year of permitting.

The initial registration of a golf cart is $50, with a $25 inspection fee. The ordinance was amended to include the second and following year registration to be lowered to $25, with a $25 inspection fee.

Golf carts are allowed on roads 35 mph or lower. Previously, Saluda’s golf cart regulations were previously for roads 30 mph or lower.

Golf cart permit renewals are due in June.
