The board of The Green Blades Garden Club of Tryon met at the Lanier Library last week Thursday to discuss the events that will shape our club’s calendar for the coming year.

Our very sad news, if you have not noticed as you drive through Tryon, “The Park on Trade” has been sadly wounded due to the tornado that devastated our town last year.  Because of the tornado, the bricks on the building next to our park have loosened and are falling.

As a result, the city has closed part of our park until the repair to the brick wall is secure. Only then will we be able to resume the care of the park and restore it to the flower filled and beautiful area it has always been, welcoming people who enter the town of Tryon.

We sincerely hope that our park will be in full bloom by September, when the 500,000-plus visitors converge upon our area for TIEC’s World Equestrian Games.

The club’s new beautification project was added in 2017, at the “Morris Corner” intersection downtown. We designed the bump out bed and planted perennials for year-round coverage, with annuals added spring and fall.

The members design, plant, trim, weed and maintain both park projects throughout the year.

Every year, our club donates seed packets to the Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry for its Garden of Hope program. Our club adopts a family every Christmas for Steps to HOPE to make sure that the family has toys, clothing and an ample amount of food to celebrate the holiday, and we have a fundraiser for Steps to HOPE and their foster children program. 

At Christmas, we have donated and decorated the Christmas trees at the Tryon Fine Arts Center since it was built. We also participate in the Christmas Stroll and The Halloween Stroll.

All in all, we strive to enrich our community with beauty and a caring heart.
