New shop opens in Campobello

CAMPOBELLO — It is an odd mix of specialty coffees, mochas and lattes, combined with horseshoes, rodeos and pickin’ music.

Yet Brittany Twichell has pulled it off with style at the Buck ‘n Brew Coffee shop. 

Located on Highway 176 outside Landrum, the shop uses Southwestern desert colors of teal and sandstone, combined with wood look tables and slat back chairs, to suggest an old cowboy movie. Customers can easily envision Clint Eastwood or John Wayne sauntering through the door and leaning against the counter, spurs jingling as he hooks a bar stool with a dusty boot.

The coffee shop is inspired from Twichell’s years as a rodeo rider. Specialty coffee drinks bear names of horse colors, such as cremello, palomino and chestnut mochas, along with blue and red roans, cattle crunches and harness hazelnut drinks. Even the peanut butter specialty combination is named the “Buttered Buckskin.”

Twichell started competing in goat tying and calf roping competitions when she was 12 years old. Along with winning several buckles and saddles, she won a state championship in 2012.

Though she studied dental hygiene in school, Twichell soon realized it was not for her.

“I worked in a coffee shop in Pickens County,” she said, explaining why she chose the Campobello location near Landrum. “I love coffee and wanted to be closer to home.”

Twichell’s husband, Dylan Twichell, is from Landrum, and the couple now lives in Campobello, where they can be close to family.

In addition to hot, cold and frozen specialty or regular coffees, the Buck ‘n Brew serves hot tea, milkshakes, hot chocolate Americanas and chai lattes. Customers can access the Wi-Fi while sipping on their drinks and munching a savory pastry from Southern Manners in Columbus.

The Buck ‘n Brew is open Monday through Friday at 6 a.m., in time for morning coffee, and on Saturday at 7 a.m. Twichell closes at 5 p.m. weeknights and at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoons.

“I hope to be able to do breakfast and possibly lunch sandwiches in the future,“ Twichell said. “We just opened in February, and have been busy.”

Future plans for the Buck ‘n Brew include making the space available for family birthdays or for showers. Twichell said it would also be fun to add some music on Friday nights.

“Maybe some pickin’,’” she said.
