Holy Cross Bell Choir at music club concert

Just imagine a bell choir ringing out a spiritual song (nothing new)  based on a Brazilian folk song (now thats new).

This will happen March 8, as part of a public program presented by the Foothills Music Club at the Tryon Congregational Church at 3 p.m.

The 11-ringer adult choir of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, directed by Susie Mahnke, will play “O Sing to the Lord” by Linda Lamb.  This “energetic piece,” to use Susie’s phrase, is based on the Brazilian folk song, “Cantad al Señor.” The singers rehearse weekly in preparation for regular Sunday morning worship services and other special events.

In addition to directing the bell choir, Susie Mahnke will be one of three organists performing on the March 8 “organ program,” as club members refer to it.  The others include E. Leslie Raymond, organist at the Tryon First Baptist Church, and Carole Bartol, local keyboard musician who is active in the Foothills Music Club. Carole will also provide accompaniment  for a recorder solo by Susan Hartley and a vocal solo by Brenda Quilling

Two other ensembles will involve voice, flute, bassoon, alto recorder, piano, wind synthesizer and voice.

A major purpose of the The Foothills Music Club is to encourage continuing musical growth of its members and to encourage young musicians by granting scholarships that will help them in their musical quest.  More information is available at foothillsmusicclub.org.
