Area receives 6.6 inches of rain in February so far

TRYON-Heavy rains in the month of February has put the area more than four inches above normal, and the month is not even half over.

Tryon received more than two inches of rain two days in February so far, putting the total for the month at 6.6 inches of rain.

The normal for February, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), is 2.01 inches of rain.

Heavy rains over the weekend caused high waters, scattered flooding and a culvert to wash out along Green River Cove Road.

Rain so far in February included 0.14 inches on Feb. 1, 1.41 inches on Feb. 4, 0.03 inches on Feb. 6, 2 inches on Feb. 7, 0.09 inches on Feb. 9, 2.1 inches on Feb. 10 and 0.83 inches on Feb. 11, according to the NWS.

The N.C. Drought Management Advisory Council listed Polk County as in abnormally dry conditions from Jan. 2 until Jan. 23.

Polk has not been listed in any type of drought conditions since the end of January.

During the month of January, the area received slightly above average precipitation with 5.36 inches. The normal for the month of January is 5.10 inches. The area also received 4 inches of snow during the month of January, while the normal for the month is 2.5 inches, according to the NWS.
