Tryon proclaims January as Mentoring Month

TRYON – The Town of Tryon approved a proclamation this week naming January as Mentoring Month and recognized the local Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.

Tryon Town Council met Tuesday, Jan. 16 and presented a proclamation to BBBS’s Karen Dacey and Mary Prioleau.

BBBS has been in the Polk County/Landrum area since 2003 and has served 796 children, including 65 matches in 2017. BBBS has been in western North Carolina since 1982 and served 2,346 children in 2017.

Following is the proclamation the Town of Tryon approved:

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters is embarking upon its 114th year as the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network; and

WHEREAS, the mentoring model of Big Brothers Big Sisters is a proven, effective strategy that helps children and young adults by matching them with a caring, responsible adult role model who can provide guidance and direction, and build their confidence; and

WHEREAS, mentoring strengthens Tryon’s economic and social well-being by helping young people fulfill their potential, encouraging healthy family relationships and promoting more vibrant communities; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been making an impact on the lives of young people in Polk/Landrum since 2003 serving a total of 796 children, with 65 matches in 2017; and in western North Carolina since 1982, serving a total of 2,346 children in 2017.

WHEREAS, residents of this community are making a profound difference in the lives of our young people by serving as mentors; and

WHEREAS, many of Tryon’s children are in need of a caring adult mentor in their lives, and closing this mentoring gap will take more investment, partnerships and volunteers ready to make a difference in a child’s life; and

WHEREAS, National Mentoring Month is an opportunity to raise public awareness of the importance of mentoring, recognize the dedicated individuals who serve as mentors and encourage more citizens to help build a brighter future for Tryon’s youth through mentoring; and

WHEREAS, in honor of the mentors, volunteers and staff, the month of January is recognized nationally as Mentoring month; now

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, J. Alan Peoples, Mayor of Tryon, North Carolina declare January 2018 Mentoring Month in this town, and as far as my jurisdiction reaches. I also call upon all citizens, businesses, public and private agencies, as well as religious and educational institutions to join the mentoring movement and to be a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Polk and WNC.
