COLUMBUS – After Polk resident Michael Veatch brought up a concern about non-posted speed limit roads, such as Moore Road, commissioners said they would look into changing some of those.

Polk commissioners met Dec. 18 and heard from Veatch during citizen comments. Veatch said Moore Road is curvy and dangerous and the speed limit is 55 mph because it is un-posted. Veatch said the speed limit should be 35 mph.

“I was really shocked to find out the speed limit on that curvy road is 55 mph,” Veatch told commissioners.

He asked how the county could change it.

Commissioner chair Jake Johnson said it would be a matter of reaching out to the N.C. Department of Transportation (DOT). Johnson said in areas that are deemed dangerous, the county could take a look.

County manager Marche Pittman said a petition would help. Veatch said he’d be willing to get a petition together to get the speed limit changed.

According to the DOT, within incorporated municipalities, the statutory speed limit is 35 mph unless otherwise ordinanced and posted. The statutory speed limit on roads outside incorporated municipalities is 55 mph unless otherwise ordinanced and posted, according to the DOT.

Commissioner Myron Yoder said he was glad Veatch brought up the issue of non-posted roads.

“Nobody going 55 (mph) is ever going to make it through Moore Road,” Yoder said.

Commissioner Shane Bradley said Veatch brought up a good thing about the speed limit and the county probably needs to look at all un-posted roads.

Johnson said the speed limit posting needs to be looked at, especially with new people coming into the county.
