Newman attended the commissioner’s Dec. 4 meeting.

Newman said the DA’s office formerly had a space on the second floor of the Polk County Courthouse, which was fine, but now has an assistant district attorney’s office located as full time as possible in the county, thanks to the county giving them space in the old county extension office.

Newman said there is staff there most of the week now, with new assistant district attorney Sauve having his primary office in Polk County.

Newman also thanked commissioners for the new jail and complimented the county on its historic courthouse.

Newman said there was recently a vigil in Canton with Mothers Against Drunk Driving with the family of a young lady who died when her friend was driving drunk. The fatality occurred in Polk County at the parking lot of Midway Baptist Church and the victim’s family is from South Carolina.

Newman said the family made a point to tell him they really liked Polk County’s courthouse.

Newman said there are three historical courthouses in the state, but Polk has the oldest and the nicest. The others are in Chowan and Transylvania counties.

Newman said he appreciates the new sound system the county installed in the courthouse recently.

“Thank you for what you’re doing,” Newman told commissioners. “What you’ve done in the court system is very appreciated.”

Commissioner chair Tommy Melton thanked Newman for coming and said he and his staff are always welcome in Polk County.

Newman covers Judicial District 29B, which includes Henderson, Polk and Transylvania counties.

Sauve is a Polk County native and was a law enforcement officer prior to graduating from law school and being hired by Newman’s office.
