PCHS Health Science class enthused about heart study

Students in Pam Arrowood’s Health Science I class at Polk County High School are excited about studying the human body.

Presently, the students are learning parts of the heart and tracing cardiopulmonary circulation (the movement of blood from the body through the heart, to the lungs, back to the heart and out to the body). Artists in the class drew the heart using sidewalk chalk and then all the students had to pretend to be blood as they traveled through the heart, telling the classmates all about “how the blood flows.”

“Health Science I is about the anatomy (structure) and physiology (function) of the human body and common diseases,” Arrowood said. “Many of these students will go on to have a career in the health care field. It thrills me that they have this desire to learn.

“By taking this class, they have advanced knowledge as they enter college. They are our future and, as I get older, I am pleased to know that these are the people who will be taking care of us.”
