The historic Tryon Theatre presents: a special Halloween evening screening of George A. Romero’s 1968 horror classic, Night of the Living Dead, on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. at the Tryon Theatre, located at 45 S. Trade St. in downtown Tryon. Tickets will be available at the Tryon Theatre box office after 6:30 p.m. on the day of the event.

In the spirit of Halloween, the historic Tryon Theatre is presenting a 4k restored version of the 1968 classic horror flick, “Night of the Living Dead.” After decades of poor-quality prints and video transfers, the film can finally be seen for the immaculately crafted film that it is thanks to a new 4K restoration, scanned from the original camera negative and supervised by Romero himself.

Shot outside of Pittsburgh at a fraction of the cost of a Hollywood feature by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark, George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” is one of the great stories of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time.

A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of flesh-eating ghouls newly arisen from their graves, Romero’s claustrophobic vision of a late 1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in the lead role. Stark, haunting, and more relevant than ever, “Night of the Living Dead” is back.

“The eerie quality of Halloween night always has an uncanny ability to ignite the imagination and heighten the senses, regardless of age. We’re beyond thrilled to present an excitingly terrifying classic like “Night of the Living Dead” here at our historic theatre on such a night. It’s the perfect chance to get together with friends for some fresh popcorn, candy, beer, wine and a night of frightening fun,” says Tryon Theatre Manager Nick Wilson.

The historic Tryon theatre was built in 1938 and is located at 45 S. Trade St. in downtown Tryon.
