The 74th reunion of Green Creek High School’s class of 1943 was held Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017 at Fatz Restaurant in Rutherfordton, N.C.

The class graduated with around 23 members in 1943 and four of the five remaining members attended the reunion. They are pictured here, left to right, Helon England of Spindale, N.C.; Shirley Gilbert of Mill Spring, N.C.; the lone gentleman, Urbane Turner of Forest City, N.C.; and Kathleen Martin of Boiling Springs, S.C. The member not attending is Juanita McGuire of Anderson, S.C. She wishes she could come, but due to her health, it is not possible.

Hugs and smiles started the get together at about 1 p.m. Lots of stories were exchanged, and, unfortunately, a lot of talk about health issues, being blind and not being able to hear. But there were also lots of stories about their caregivers, some family and some adopted family, and how special they are to each of them.

Shirley Gilbert presented a memorial for her lifelong friend, Sarah Calvert. Sarah went to be with her Lord in 2016 only a year after her husband Grady, who was also a class member.

Our lovely waitress Jordan served our lunch and took very good care of us. All seemed to enjoy their food, at least all of it was gone! Helon England brought cupcakes with Class of 43 on them, white with blue letters and tasty, yum!

More stories were told and we finally departed about 3 p.m. with everyone looking happy, but pretty tired. The final statement was, “OK, everyone, hang in, we have got to make our 75th class reunion next year!”

I have no doubt they will make it.
