12-run first inning sparks Polk to rout of Mitchell

Polk County raced to a 12-0 lead after one inning Tuesday and went on to post a 17-0 win over Mitchell in a Western Highlands Conference softball meeting at Polk.

The Wolverines hammered 21 hits in improving to 6-5 overall, 5-3 in conference play.

Polk County’s junior varsity also rolled to a 15-0 win.

Ashley Scruggs and Ashley Ponder each finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and Anna McFadden also finished 3-for-4 to lead the Wolverines at the plate. Autumn Owen homered and drove in two runs while Haley Fowler, Miranda Gosnell, Morgan Stott, Karli Wood and Hannah Emory each had two hits.

Scruggs pitched all five innings, allowing three hits and striking out three, in earning the 60th victory of her career.

Polk County hosts Avery on Thursday in another WHC matchup.
