On Property Valuations

Published 5:40 pm Thursday, March 23, 2017

Over the past couple meetings we have had a lot of citizens come out and express their concerns with the increased property values here in the county. As a lifelong resident of the county, this pains me to see. I know many that are suffering did not ask for the changes that we are seeing. The last thing I want to see is someone who has lived here their whole life, and made this county what it is today, have to move because they cannot afford to live here. I ran for this office to serve the people of this county, not the outside interest that make the biggest headlines.

It is extremely frustrating that due to state laws and regulations outlined in the N.C. Machinery Act, there are no legal means for the commissioners themselves to change the values.

However, we are taking every step in our power to make sure that if you want to live in Polk County, you can afford to do so.

There are 4 main focuses I have going forward: 1. Make sure that everyone who believes their values are unfair, has a chance to appeal at all three levels (Tax Office, E & R Board, and State). 2. Reach out to our legislators in Raleigh and see if there are any changes to be made to statutory tax regulations. 3. Increase the awareness and education of the tax exemptions that citizens may qualify for, such as agriculture exemptions, or elderly and disabled 4. Make sure we have a budget as fiscally conservative as possible so that we can keep the rate as low as possible.

I love this county and will do anything in my power to stand up for the people who call it home. I will be happy to present any suggestions you have to our staff and legislators. Just email me at jjohnson@polknc.org. Thank you and God Bless.
