Smith’s 42 points leads Cardinal men over GMC, 101-60

Landrum’s men capitalized on the number 42, as the Cardinals destroyed Greer Middle College High School, 101-60, in varsity basketball at Taylors on Tuesday evening, Feb. 7.

Sophomore guard Trey Smith scored 42 points in the romp, which boosted Landrum’s season mark to 17-6 overall and 7-2 in the region. Smith’s effort was a career high, besting his 40-point outburst against Blue Ridge, earlier this season.

In addition, the Cardinals erupted for 42 points in the third quarter, while holding the Blazers to 9, giving the winners a 91-36 lead after three periods.

Smith sank six three-pointers, grabbed five rebounds, dished out five assists, and made eight steals. Teammate Foster Bridges added 22 points and ten rebounds. Manny Gonzalez scored 12, and pulled down six rebounds. Easton Jenkins cleared the boards ten times, while Gonzalez, Turner Ussery and Dalton Lawson each made three steals.

Going into state playoffs, it was a banner night for the Cardinals, who had narrowly missed the 100-point mark in their recent 98-46 win over Chesnee.
