Avery wrestlers push past Polk in conference opener

Avery handed Polk County a 60-15 setback in its Western Highlands Conference wrestling opener on Tuesday at Polk.

The Vikings built a 27-0 lead in the match, including a pair of forfeit wins, before the Wolverines got on the board at 106 pounds, with Darryl Ceasar pinning Carson Coffey midway through the first period.

Triston Watkins followed with a win by forfeit at 113 pounds, but that would be all for the Wolverines until the final match of the evening, where Carlos Sedano earned a decision over Cole Singleton at 160 pounds.

Polk County is slated to be back in action on Thursday, hosting Mountain Heritage and Mitchell for a conference tri-match. Cane River Middle School, part of the Yancey County district, will also wrestle against Polk County Middle School. All matches begin at 5 p.m. at Polk County High School.
