‘Tis the season (for library activities)

I don’t know about you, but I love finding that special gift that someone I know will adore and appreciate. I truly believe in the old adage “‘tis better to give than to receive.” And what better time than Christmas to give? This month at Polk County Public Library, we are celebrating the holidays with a “Season of Giving” program series. We will provide several ways for you to give back to both the community and your loved ones throughout December.

As a huge animal lover and supporter of animal rescue centers, I am always happy when the library partners with the Foothills Humane Society. Right now, we have crafting tables set up at both libraries with fleece and batting available to make pet beds. Come help us make them anytime the library is open! The beds will be donated to the cats and dogs at FHS.

We have two programs coming up that will benefit the seniors at local nursing homes. On December 12, teens at the Saluda Library will make cards and decorate cookies to be delivered to Autumn Care. On December 14, kids and families at the Columbus Library will decorate Christmas cards that will be sent to White Oak residents.

The event I am most excited about is happening on December 21 at the Tryon Theatre. PCPL is sponsoring a screening of the awesome movie “Elf” (starring Will Ferrell), which is free for all local residents and families to attend! We will also provide free hot chocolate and cookies to attendees. This is our way of giving back to a great community that supports us. We do ask that each attendee bring a nonperishable food item in lieu of admission. Items collected will be donated to Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry.

In addition to programs where you can donate to local organizations, we have several fun craft workshops this month. Your creations can be used as gifts for friends or family! Kids in preschool and elementary school can join us today at 4pm in Columbus to make perler bead ornaments. Teens in Columbus will make holiday wreaths next Tuesday the 13th. And adults are invited to the Saluda Library on Monday the 12th to make “Merry Mail” Christmas card holders. As always, all materials are provided free of charge.

Already have your gifts ready to give, but need a chance (or a space away from prying eyes) to wrap them? Come to the Columbus Library tonight between 5:30-7:30 p.m. for “Wrap It Up!” Wrapping paper, bows, and tape will be provided. Sip on hot chocolate, enjoy festive music, and wrap your gifts for the holiday season. What fun!

I hope to see you at one (or more) of our many programs during the Season of Giving and also at Saluda Hometown Christmas on Friday night. Drop by the library for free refreshments, music, and balloon twisting for the kids. Mr. Twister from Asheville is returning to the library this year with his impressive balloon creations. Come early!
