Elena Robson, member of the Saluda Garden Club and Saluda’s Tree City USA, recently donated a tulip tree to Saluda Elementary School.

Third grade students in Melissa Gillespie’s class were “hands-on” in helping with the planting. Elizabeth Taylor of the Saluda Garden Club and Don Clapp, representing Saluda’s Tree City USA, assisted with the planting.

Third graders learned that the tulip tree, also known as a tulip poplar, is native to this part of the country and will grow well with Saluda’s climate conditions. The tree will grow tall and straight in the forest, but when it has the space, like this one will, it will branch out and be more rounded.

Students helped fill in the loose soil around the root ball, watered it well and were thankful to be part of the Giving Tree project.
