Polk County senior Ryan Fox powers into the end zone Friday night for the Wolverines’ final touchdown.

Jamie Thompson listened intently to the question from Jaymes Wingo in Polk County’s postgame huddle Friday night – and smiled at it.

“Yes, Jaymes, we can go bust a move. In the locker room,” Thompson said.

Players smiled, high-fives were exchanged, the sounds of Michael Jackson echoed through the Wolverine field house and it felt like a Homecoming night should be Friday night at G.M. Tennant Stadium. Polk County rolled to a 46-7 victory over Avery, snapping a two-game losing streak and winning at home for the first time this season.

The Wolverines ran for more than 400 yards and piled up 531 total against an Avery team outmatched from the start. The Vikings entered with a 3-4 record, but with two key starters missing and starting a new quarterback, Avery struggled to generate any offense, recording just one first down en route to falling behind 28-0 by the midpoint of the second quarter.

Polk County (4-5, 2-2) had much to do with those struggles. The Wolverines looked crisp on offense, mixing in an effective short passing game with their traditional ground attack, and the numbers reflected that focus. Elijah Sutton ran for four touchdowns, Wingo scored two more and senior Ryan Fox added a late score that brought the Polk County bench to its feet.

“We didn’t have a three-and-out all night long,” Thompson said. “We’ve had a couple of games where we had one. That’s a goal of ours. To get that is huge for us.

“It’s good to put a whole game together, a complete game offensively and defensively. We told the kids before the game that a lot of times, we concentrate on wins and losses. Sometimes we forget that we coach the game and play the game to have fun. We told them that in tonight’s game, let’s have fun.”

And so they did.

The opening three minutes set the tone for the game. Avery went three-and-out on its first possession, and Polk quickly scored, Wingo’s 62-yard scamper setting up a 1-yard scoring plunge for the senior at the 9:12 mark. The story repeated on each team’s next possession, the Vikings punting after three players, Polk driving to score, this time on a 24-yard pass to Wingo from Dillon Overholt, giving the Wolverines a 13-0 lead with 3:30 left.

Avery fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and the Wolverines quickly scored again. A 22-yard jump pass from Overholt to Josh Chupp set up the first of Sutton’s scores, a 1-yard run, and a 2-point conversion made it 21-0 with 3:30 still remaining in the first quarter.

Sutton’s 43-yard jaunt through the middle of the Avery defense at the 7:45 mark of the second period made it 28-0. Sutton added scoring runs of 3 and 5 yards in the third period and Fox dove in from the 1 in the closing minutes of the fourth period.

“We nicknamed him Touchdown Tony,” Thompson said of Fox. “I liked what I saw of him out there (Fox had 74 yards on nine carries).

“Everybody got to play and a lot of people did good things. I’m proud of that.”

Wingo ran for 148 yards on 15 carries and Sutton had 116 on 13 carries. Overholt finished 6-of-11 for 128 yards in three quarters of work, with Avery Edwards directing the Polk offense in the final quarter.

Chupp and Luke Sellers had fumble recoveries and Dillon Knighton had an interception to lead the Polk defense.
