Tryon AAUW meets Monday: Chapter to hear from two Clemson scholarship winners

The Tryon Branch of AAUW will start this year’s activities Monday, Sept. 26 at the Tryon Presbyterian Church. Members will be hearing from our two Clemson scholarship winners. The meeting is at 1:30 and interested members of the community are welcomed to attend.
Two rising juniors from Polk County and Landrum High Schools attended the Clemson University Summer Scholars Program this year through Tryon Branch AAUW scholarships. These students were recognized by their teachers and administrations for excellent academic performance. They will speak about their experiences at the meeting.
Grace Valentine, daughter of Karen and Jeff Valentine, is an all-state runner, runner of the year and a member of Landrum High School’s ranked cross-country team. She also is a member of the yearbook and the National Art Honor Society. She participated in Genetic Horizons during the week of June 19.
Melanie Metcalf, daughter of Judi and Jonathan Metcalf, is secretary of Polk County High School’s Health Occupation Students of America where she won first place for her speech on the regional level and seventh place at the state level. A member of Project Unify, she also volunteers with Special Olympics and the school’s blood drive. She participated in the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program during the week of June 26.
Jason McCraw, principal at Landrum High School, will speak on the 21st century high school, how Landrum High School and Spartanburg District One prepare our students for life after high school.
