Remembering 9/11 this weekend

Several events will be going on in the foothills community this weekend and Monday to honor and remember the victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
On Saturday, Sept. 10, McFarland Funeral Chapel will be holding a special remembrance to honor loved ones who’ve passed away at Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus. The event coincides with National Grandparents’ Day, Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance, which are all celebrated on Sept. 11. Saturday’s event will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and will include the Polk County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard, local emergency personnel and funeral chapel staff on hand give out complimentary flowers to attendees to place on graves and to help people find gravesites as well as give information about the cemetery.
On Sunday, Sept. 11, local fire fighters will be dressed in full turn out gear at the corner of Stearns Park in Columbus. Firefighters will be there to honor those who lost their lives from 8:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
On Sunday, Sept. 11, the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District will hold an observance at First Baptist Church of Landrum from 6-7:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable items for donations.
On Monday, Sept. 12, the Polk County Memorial VFW Auxiliary #9116 will lay a wreath in honor of Gold and Blue Star mothers and light a candle in honor of prisoners of war and missing in action at the Brick Memorial in Veterans Park in Columbus at 11 a.m. The ceremony will be followed by a 9-11 ceremony to honor all Polk County emergency personnel at Columbus Town Hall.
