Upstairs Artspace is presenting five artists in a show titled “Filling A Void: The Art of Installation.” The public is invite to the Artist Walk & Talk at 5 p.m. and the reception at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6. This exhibit is open through Sept. 16.

“‘Filling A Void’ would never be seen in most art galleries since installation art can take up a great deal of space and is usually not for sale,” says Michele Deudne, executive director of the Upstairs. “However, the nonprofit Upstairs stays true to its mission to be “innovative,” “cutting edge,” and “contemporary” as well as to stretch our perceptions.”

Five artists have each been invited to create a work large enough to fill the space they have been given. Ayako Miller, Carey Morton, Leah Cabinum, Melissa Earley and Susan Klein began their installations on Tuesday Aug. 2, to be completed in time for the opening, Friday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m.

What is installation art? According to Wikipedia, installation art is an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that often are site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space. Generally, the term is applied to interior spaces, whereas exterior interventions are often called public art, land art or intervention art; however, the boundaries between these terms overlap.

This exciting exhibit is sponsored by Godsey & Gibbs Wealth Management of Columbia S.C. Don’t miss it!
