History museum’ treasure of the month
Published 7:00 pm Tuesday, July 26, 2016
The month of July saw the start of two wars that involved the United States. 1776 was our own effort for independence. The other, July 27, 1917, was World War I, a.k.a. the Last Great War or the War to End All Wars.
The Polk County Historical Association Museum has displays for both of America’s July wars. The first is a bag made by Polk resident Edwena Ongar that held her knitting needles and materials used to knit socks for Polk soldiers serving overseas; the other is pictures of the 350th machine gun battalion with at least 12 Polk County soldiers.
To see and learn about more local history, visit your county museum at 60 Walker St. Columbus, N.C. Tuesday and Thursday 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; and by appointment.
