June McCall Current was a loving, generous and joyous woman who made everyone who knew her a better and happier person. She was a loving spouse for 57 years, a mother and friend to her sisters, an ally of and mentor to her children, and a faithful friend. She loved to play games of all kinds, read books, drink red wine, eat chocolate and oysters, celebrate Christmas, spend time at the beach with her family, wear silly hats, and have lunch with “the girls.” She never missed a birthday or gave a gift that didn’t reflect thoughtfulness and love. She lived unselfishly, loved unconditionally, and laughed freely. She always saw the best in people and was unfailingly kind.
June was born on April 23, 1939 in Newton, New Jersey. She was named after her father, Jesse McCall, Jr. (“June”), and her mother, Louise, and was raised as a doctor’s daughter with three siblings in a small town. She was the apple of her daddy’s eye, and the valedictorian of her high school class. She attended Randolph Macon College before marrying a young Air Force lieutenant, Fred Current, from her home town. She then embarked on a life as an Air Force officer’s wife. She raised four children, Molly, Zoe, Craig and Tim. Her greatest pride was that all four of them graduated from college or graduate school, and even more importantly, built loving and happy families of their own.
Later in life, she graduated from Furman University in the same month that her oldest daughter graduated from college. She had a distinguished career as a banker with what is now Wells Fargo in Greenville, South Carolina. She became a Bank Vice President, and in nearly 18 years of work, she never took a sick day. She and Fred then moved to Tryon to the lovely brown house in the woods that would be her home for the rest of her life.
She became the adoring grandmother of seven children: Tyler, Scout, Bryce, McCall, Joshua, Caroline and Andrew. Spending time with her grandchildren was one of her chief joys in life.
June bloomed in Tryon. She became very active in her church and community, taking on leadership positions with the Green Blades Garden Club, the Tryon Country Club, and the Congregational Church. In 2014, June was inducted into the “Second Wind Hall of Fame,” in recognition of her “outstanding service to others and the community.” The award described her as someone who “gets things done, whether in structured positions of leadership or in less visible supporting roles.”
She passed away on June 7, 2016. In the 77 years she graced this earth, June built a strong family, made many friends, and lived a full and happy life that was always more about the people around her than it was about herself. In the end, this is her epitaph.
A memorial service will be held at the Congregational Church of Tryon on June 18, 2016 at 2 p.m., followed by a reception to celebrate her life at her family home, 56 Wells Lane in Tryon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.
