William Alexander “Alex” Hyder

William Alexander “Alex” Hyder, 80, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, S.C.
Alex was born to the late Arnold and Kathleen Espey Hyder of Chester, S.C. He proudly served his country in the South Carolina Army National Guard and retired as a Command Sargent Major after 24 plus years of service. Alex had numerous artistic abilities. He was a member of the carvers class at ICC, attended many classes at Tryon Arts and Crafts, and was a talented photographer. He was an avid bridge player and in his younger days, he could often be found on the golf course with the “Geezers” golf group.
Alex is survived by a daughter, Emily Hyder Bartlett (David); a son, William A. Hyder Jr.; four grandchildren, Nathan Bartlett (Hallie), Ethan Bartlett, Madelaine Hyder, and Matthew Hyder; and one great-grandchild, Mary Ellen Bartlett. Also surviving are two brothers, James Hyder of Augusta, Ga., and George Hyder of Anderson, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his wife Frances Grogan Hyder in 2000. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Buddy Hyder and Marion Hyder.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. at McFarland Funeral Chapel in Tryon, N.C.
