Polk County investigators are trying to put the pieces together to discover who killed a box truck driver just before 6 a.m. Thursday, March 31 in Columbus.

The sheriff’s office issued photographs from surveillance cameras at the BP across Hwy. 108 where the homicide occurred around the same time and now have issued warrants for two of the people in the surveillance video accused of stealing the red Ford Mustang they were driving.

Destry Horne, 51, of Lilesville, N.C. was found deceased from a gunshot wound in the box truck he was driving on the on ramp of U.S. 74 off Hwy. 108 in Columbus. Another truck driver told investigators he stopped on the on ramp to rest and when he got out of his truck the box truck rolled into his. The driver called 911 to report the property damage and the Columbus Police Department responded to find Horne deceased in the box truck. An autopsy was done on Horne on Friday, April 1 at the state medical examiner’s office in Winston Salem with the preliminary report stating Horne died from a gunshot wound. Polk County Sheriff’s Office officials said the gun used was a handgun, but did not know at the time what caliber.

The sheriff’s office issued warrants over the weekend for the arrests of Quintae Dayrelle Edwards, 23, and Kayla Lynn Black, 20, both believed to be from the Spartanburg, S.C. area who were seen at the BP. Both are wanted in Polk County for possession of a stolen vehicle and wanted in Spartanburg County for larceny of a motor vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

As of late Sunday evening, no arrests had been made for the stolen vehicle or for Horne’s homicide.

Investigators issued the photographs in hopes that the four individuals at the BP gas station may have seen something in the area on the morning of the homicide.

The individuals were video taped between 5:15-5:45 a.m. March 31 and the tractor-trailer driver made the 911 call at 5:52 a.m. There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Horne was employed with JJ Haines Flooring in Wadesboro.

“Known for his infectious smile, Destry was a friend to all and cared for others unconditionally,” his obituary from Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro, N.C. says.

Horne’s services are scheduled for Tuesday, April 5 with receiving friends from 5-8 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home and a service to celebrate Horne’s life at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 6 at First Baptist Church, Lee Avenue, Wadesboro, N.C.

Horne is survived by his wife, four children, a grandson brothers and sisters.
