St. Luke’s Hospital Marketing and Public Relations Department has hired Spartanburg, S.C., native and graduate of USC Upstate Cody H. Owens as Marketing/PR assistant. Owens recently worked at a nonprofit arts agency managing graphics, social media, websites, accounts payable, and assisting in other departments as needed. He will assume similar communications duties for St. Luke’s under the direction of Kathy Woodham, director of Marketing/PR.
“The only thing that has been more striking to me than the scenic drive from Spartanburg has been the warm welcome from everyone on staff,” Owens said. “I look forward to what I can accomplish here and to becoming part of the community at large as well.”
Owens graduated from USC Upstate in May 2013 with a degree in speech communications and a minor in Spanish translation and interpretation. As a student, he was very involved, serving as editor-in-chief of the campus literary journal, student ambassador, orientation leader, a member of a health services advisory committee, and a volunteer for several student organizations.
After graduation, he became an apprentice at Chapman Cultural Center, a nonprofit arts administration agency in downtown Spartanburg, before being hired as Marketing and Administrative assistant a month later. He left his position at the beginning of March after three years of service to join St. Luke’s Hospital.
Outside of work, Owens freelances as a graphic designer, writer, editor, and marketing consultant. He is a spoken word poet and activist, and he recently became involved in the Upstate, S.C., improvisational acting scene.
