Landrum City Council approves Peach Street beautification project

Landrum City Council approved Bill Robinson’s plan to beautify the abandoned Peach Street outside his business, Keystone Self Storage, in Landrum on Tuesday evening at Landrum City Hall during their monthly meeting. Robinson, in conjunction with the city, will create a walking path along the road outside his business leading pedestrians to E. Tucker Street. Robinson will also build a fence and extend his gravel parking lot to the fence beside the path. According to city administrator Caitlin Cothran, the City of Landrum will pay for landscaping shrubs along the path near the railroad tracks.

 

Landrum City Council approves change in work session, monthly meeting times

At their monthly meeting held March 8, Landrum City Council approved shifting the start time of their work sessions, held prior to council meetings, from 4:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. In addition to the work session time change, Landrum City Council approved the motion to start monthly council meetings at 6:30 p.m. Work sessions are held in the conference room and council meetings in council chambers, at City Hall.

 

Polk closes out CDBG grant for TIEC water/sewer

During the Polk County Board of Commissioner March 7 meeting, commissioners unanimously approved closing out a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in order for the Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) to receive water service from the county and sewer service from the Town of Rutherfordton. Commissioners held a public hearing with no comments. The county also had to de-obligate almost $70,000 of unused grant funds because the project was under budget. The 25 percent match to the grant was provided by TIEC, so no county money was used. The company created 44 jobs to satisfy the grant.

 

Polk waives participation fee for new users along water line extension

As common practice the last couple of years, Polk County is waiving participation fees for customers to tap onto a water line extension going in from the Sunny View School to the county line. The tap fee currently is approximately $850, which is cost, to tap onto the water line. Commissioner Ray Gasperson was the sole vote against, saying he doesn’t want to condone the water line in any way. Commissioner Shane Bradley voted against the extension of the water line but voted in favor of waiving the participation fee, saying he feels this will help the citizens out to some extent and may get more participation for the county.
