From Nov. 2-6, 100 seniors from Polk County High School and Polk County Early College applied to college during the College Foundation of North Carolina’s annual College Application Week.  They submitted 230 total applications to 36 different colleges and universities.

During College Application Week, five UNC system schools and 27 North Carolina private schools waive application fees for all students.

Many students took advantage of this opportunity to apply to local community colleges. The most popular school for seniors was Isothermal Community College, which received 55 applications. Blue Ridge Community College was close on its heels with 37 applicants.

Asheville-Buncombe Tech, Brevard, and Mars Hill all received applications from 12 Polk County students last week. Other popular four-year colleges included Gardner Webb, Lenoir-Rhyne, Western Carolina, Appalachian State, Wingate and Salem.

Underclassmen also had the chance to get in on the fun and to learn about their post-secondary education options. On Monday, Nov. 2, 33 students toured the University of North Carolina Asheville. Students ate lunch in the dining hall, toured campus and attended an admissions information session.

Later in the week, admissions representatives from Davidson, Wofford and Appalachian State visited the school district to meet with interested students.

Good job to all the seniors who applied. If you see them around town be sure to wish them luck and to congratulate them on their hard work.

Any senior who has not applied yet or would like assistance on additional applications should feel free to contact Peter Vogel, Polk County’s college adviser, either in school or by email at pvogel@live.unc.edu.
