Students can attend a variety of camps at the middle school from 1-3 p.m., including babysitting from the 4-H Center, craft courses from Tryon Arts and Crafts and a farm camp from the Polk County Agricultural Center. There are 28 camps to choose from which are open to all Polk County Middle School students who have completed grades 6-8. The fee for participation is $20 per one-week camp.

During the babysitting camp, students will receive their American Heart Association CPR certification with school nurses to cover first aid and provide the CPR training. Tryon Arts and Crafts courses will include woodworking, fused glass and pottery. Students will be bused to Tryon Arts and Crafts for the camps.

The Polk County Agricultural Center’s Americorps volunteers will provide the farm camp and will incorporate all aspects of farming, planting, harvesting, food preparation and preservation using a Ball Canning grant.

All personnel will have background checks.

The middle school camps will be held the weeks of June 15-19 and June 22-26 (Monday-Friday).

All the camps are funded in part by a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant through the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.

Tryon Arts and Crafts, 4H and the Mill Spring Ag Center are community partners providing programming.

The school system is also in the process of forming a county-wide children’s choir, with a two-week, free summer camp from June 15-26 at the middle school. The children’s choir camp is open to rising fourth, fifth and sixth grade students from all Polk County Elementary Schools. The children’s choir camp is directed by Jeanette Shackleford and will meet during the two weeks from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Registration forms for the Epic-Awesome Summer Enrichment camps for middle school students are available at the school.

Those interested in the choral camp should attend a parent informational meeting on June 8 at the middle school cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. Questions regarding the enrichment camps or the choral camp can be addressed to Emily Bartlett at the Stearns Education Center at 828-894-3051.
