George I. Mishtowt

Dr. George Illarion Mishtowt, 97, of Landrum passed away on Jan. 26, 2015.  Born in Bethesda, Md., he was the son of the late Illarion and Irene Daviedov Mishtowt and husband of the late Jacoba Mayer-Ranneft Mishtowt.

He is survived by his son, Alex Mishtowt of Landrum, S.C.

Dr. Mishtowt earned a scholarship to Georgetown University where he graduated at the top of his class and to medical school where he also graduated at the top of his class.  He then studied to become an internist specializing in cardiology and tropical diseases.

He served in the 82nd Airborne and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. He became a physician in private practice, and then assisted in creating the Medical Department of the State Department. He traveled the world with his family practicing medicine mostly in Iraq, the Phillipines and Thailand. In the 1960’s he came back to the United States where he became director of the Medical Department of the State Department for 5 years. He then went back into private practice until his early 70’s.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015 at Petty Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Bobby Pierce.
