Walker hired as Polk’s new solid waste director

After 20 years working with the Town of Tryon, serving most recently as the Tryon sanitation supervisor, Larry Walker has resigned to accept the position of Polk County solid waste director.
Walker will replace Neal Hall as county solid waste director who has recently been working part-time and has retired.
Tryon Town Council met Tuesday, Jan. 20 and presented Walker with a resolution for his years of service.
Tryon first hired Walker in 1995 with the sanitation department. He was promoted to sanitation worker III in 2007 and promoted to sanitation supervisor in 2010.
Walker was also a volunteer firefighter for Tryon from 2000-2005 and has served as a member of the Polk County Rescue Squad.
Walker thanked the town, saying it was a hard decision to leave after 20 years.
Following is the resolution presented to Walker during council’s Jan. 20 meeting:
Resolution in appreciation of Larry Walker
WHEREAS, Larry Walker was hired by the Town of Tryon Sanitation Department on May 16, 1995; and
WHEREAS, Larry Walker was promoted from Sanitation Worker II to Sanitation Worker III on January 1, 2007 and thereafter promoted to Sanitation Supervisor on September 29, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Larry Walker successfully completed Flagger Training (2010 and 2013), Disaster Debris Management Training (2012) and Recycling Training (2013) applying skills and knowledge gained thereby to improve sanitation and recycling services to the Town of Tryon; and
WHEREAS, Larry Walker developed grant requests and administered recycling grants for curbside recycling bins, event recycling equipment and recycling drop-off center equipment effectively; and
WHEREAS, Larry Walker also served as a volunteer firefighter for Tryon Fire Department from April 2000 to October 2005 and also served as a member of the Polk County Rescue Squad; and
WHEREAS, Larry Walker served as a Tryon’s representative to the Carolina Recycling Association; and
WHEREAS, Larry Walker successfully addressed the challenges of providing efficient sanitation services to the citizens of the Town of Tryon for the past 19½ years; and
WHEREAS, Larry Walker has been offered and has accepted a position as Solid Waste Director with the Polk County Transfer Station – Solid Waste Department and has reluctantly tendered his resignation from the position of Tryon Sanitation Department Supervisor; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE TRYON BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS RECOGNIZES TRYON SANITATION DEPARTMENT SUPERVISOR LARRY WALKER
For his professionalism, dedication and service to citizens of the Town of Tryon and Polk County, and For serving as key member of Tryon’s Public Works – Sanitation Management Team; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE TRYON BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
wishes Larry Walker success in his future endeavors.
