Encouraging more bicyclists in Tryon

To the Editor:
I’m sure you’ve noticed an ever-increasing use of our roads by road bicyclists. I hope that the Town of Tryon will find a way to also encourage more bicyclists through more events. Along with this increased activity comes with it a request for all motorists’ help.
Here in Tryon and surrounding Polk County the roads are extremely narrow. Where I’m originally from in Utah, we had a much wider road even in rural areas, so the risk of an accident was reduced. Here, safety awareness is critical.
Today while riding, I was almost sideswiped by a van. The road was clear in both directions. The driver was either negligent or not aware of a bicyclist’s need for a safety or buffer zone.
Here are some scenarios you should be aware of: the slower a bicyclist goes (especially uphill), the less stable a bike can be which can cause a biker to lose balance or swerve. (Honestly, we’re going as fast as we can.) Potholes, rocks and sharp road shoulders with 2 or more inches of drop-off can throw a bicycle out into the middle of the road. Don’t expect a bicycle to ride a tightrope of 1 foot or less on the side. He has the same rights to the road as a motorist does.
Please, don’t pass us on a blind curve. Wait a couple more seconds until you have a clear view of the passing lane. Just because the road has a double yellow line on it doesn’t mean you can’t swing over to the other lane to pass us. You don’t have to try to stay within your lane to obey a no passing requirement when it comes to passing a bicyclist.
Slow down while passing us to avoid any sudden problems we might encounter and let us share the road with you.
And finally, join us. Enjoy our great roads and a great pastime in Tryon and the surrounding areas. There are many groups from beginners to advanced. We always extend a welcome to new people.
