Join Slow Food Asheville Foothills from 4 – 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 31 at Overmountain Vineyards for its third annual Spring Fundraiser. As in previous years, the event will focus around local, fresh and seasonal food and libations.
A concert from Gigi Dover and The Big Love will provide the backbone for the evening’s musical line-up. A silent auction of more than a hundred products, services and items will run throughout the evening.
Slow Food Foothills is a part of an international organization that believes nutritious and healthy food is a right, not a privilege.
The group, a 501(c) 3, works with many existing groups and organizations throughout Polk County such as Polk County’s Head Start Program, the County Extension Office, Thermal Belt Ministries Outreach and the Mill Spring Ag Center. It hosts free educational programs that promote healthy eating choices, cooking classes and community potlucks as well as supports community events such as Super Saturday, Columbus Farm Fest and Farm to Fork.
According to current Foothills chapter leader Mindy Wiener, “We are always looking to support the community efforts already in place in Polk County while providing a healthy, local, and affordable option.
There is a stigma that healthy eating is expensive or complicated and we are trying our best to dispel that myth. We have an abundance of local, fresh, seasonal food that is grown within our county but often times, people just don’t know how to get it from garden to table.
The monies raised through our Spring Fundraiser allow us to continue working with the community throughout the rest of the year.”
Tickets for this year’s event are available on-line through www.eventbrite.com or throughout the community at Slow Food supporting businesses. La Bouteille in Tryon, the Ag Center’s Farm Store in Mill Spring, Overmountain Vineyards in Green Creek and Meanwhile Back in Saluda’s Wine Shop & Local Market in Saluda. Ticket prices include food and entertainment. Beer and Wine are available for additional purchase.
