LaurelHurst will host a free  “The Healing Power of Reminiscence” workshop for adult care professionals on April 9 from 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 pm. Conducted by national workshop facilitator, Robin Edgar, the workshop is approved by the NC Division of Health Service Regulation – Adult Care Licensure Section and full attendance will provide three CEU hours. Sponsored by the Akula Foundation of New Orleans and Capital Senior Living, there is no cost for the workshop and, in addition to three CEUs, participants will receive a free lunch. Space is limited, however, so registration is required.
The Healing Power of Reminiscence is an interactive workshop that provides tools that use sense-memory to recall, record and celebrate significant memories. Based on techniques from her book, “In My Mother s Kitchen,” An Introduction to the Healing Power of Reminiscence, Edgar conducts workshops for adult care and bereavement to demonstrate how to use reminiscence as an effective tool to cope with loss or change and to work through unhappy memories. This process promotes a feeling of well-being and camaraderie between residents, caregivers and family members as it illustrates how to utilize rituals based on these memories for -long term care planning.
As part of its goal to assist with quality in end of life as well bereavement and long-term care planning, the Akula Foundation offers organizations to have Edgar’s reminiscence workshops, free of charge. In addition to facilitating a workshop for professionals, they sponsor her to conduct group reminiscence therapy sessions for family caregivers and residents.
