Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator, developed the concept of Montessori education in the late 19th century. Montessori education supports children’s natural development by emphasizing independent discovery with freely chosen activities in a mixed age environment.
As a six-time nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize, Montessori believed that the ultimate goal of all educators should be the creation of a peaceful world, and that with proper educational support, all children could follow their natural inclinations to love, to reach out to and respect the people, animals and plants that populate their world.
A Thousand Forests’ name comes for the Ralph Waldo Emerson quotation, “the creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.”
