Short on time this year? Consider sharing a plot with a friend. The Saluda Community Land Trust, which sponsors the community garden, is offering a new service to both new and experienced gardeners who reserved a plot in the garden for 2014.

Walter Hoover has volunteered to help anyone who would like some hands-on practical guidance now or later in the growing season. Hoover will work with interested people on an individual basis at the garden.

The objective of this outreach is to increase production in and enjoyment of the garden plots for an extended growing season. Learn about soil preparation, inter-planting, succession planting, weed control and other gardening techniques that can increase success and satisfaction.

To make arrangements, call Hoover at 828-749-5846 or email him at charlesstreetgarden@ tds.net. So, sign up for a plot for 2014 and let February be the month for planning and for ordering seeds in anticipation of the new gardening season.

Don’t forget that March is the month for planting early crops such as English and snow peas, fava beans, Irish potatoes, radishes, beets, carrots, lettuce, spinach, kale and more.
