Tribal belly dance is an American hybrid improvisational style, which blends many ancient, ethnic dance traditions, a fusion of traditional Middle Eastern dance with folkloric dance movements from India, Central Asia, North Africa and Spain.
It is a group of women dancing in unison with no pre-set choreography using a lead and follow vocabulary of moves and cues, a form of non-verbal communication. It is earthy, grounded and about women dancing as a tribe for the pure joy of it and the community that grows as a result, said Synnestvedt.
New tribal belly dance level 1 classes began Jan. 29 at the
Saluda Center Yoga Studio (downstairs entrance.) The classes meet on Wednesdays at 6 p.m.
