Friendship Council sponsors Creative Arts Competition

The Thermal Belt Friendship Council will sponsor a Creative Arts Competition for area middle and high school students in conjunction with the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration set for Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. Information on the competition is as follows:
Categories: Poetry, Art, Musical/Oratorical
Awards (for each separate category): First Place – $75; Second Place- $50; and Third Place $25.
Contest rules: All entries must be submitted by January 6, 2014 to Langlee Garrett at Polk County Middle School, Jeff Phillips at Landrum Middle School, Cindi Rhodes at Polk County High School or Penny Cardell at Landrum High School.
All entries must be the participant’s original work. Participants must follow guidelines for the category in which he/she enters.
Essay guidelines: How does Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream affect your life today?
Three – five, typed pages, double-spaced, not to exceed 1,500 words, Times New Roman, 12 point font. All references and materials from other sources should be cited.
Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:
• Content/Subject matter as it relates to the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
• Originality/Creativity
• Tone (the writer’s attitude toward his/her subject)
• Development of the theme
• Organization
• Mechanics (Grammar, punctuation, and spelling)
Art guidelines: A depiction of Dr. King’s philosophy in relation to images of the struggle for civil rights that demonstrates how his life empowered people to reach for the dream.
Artwork (excluding matting) should not exceed 22 X 28 inches. Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:
• Originality/creativity
• Subject matter
• Development of the theme
Musical/Oratorical Guidelines: Selections should demonstrate “Living the Dream.”
Selections must be original. Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:

• Subject matter
• Delivery
