Polk, Landrum grab wins at weekend wrestling meet

Polk County High School’s very young wrestling team has won its last four meets (pocketing big wins in Saturday’s multi-team dual meet at East Henderson), and is now 4-6 overall.

In one of Saturday’s meets, the Wolverines topped rival Landrum, 37-27. Polk edged East Henderson, 37-33, while Landrum used six pins to edge East Henderson, 36-34.

Polk also topped Cherokee, 45-27. Landrum defeated Cherokee as well, 45-30.

Landrum’s Cardinals lost to Polk County but grabbed wins on the mat over East Henderson and Cherokee.

In the Polk/Landrum matchup, which began with 138-pounders, Landrum got off to a 6-0 start, when Clay Prass pinned Cheyenne Young. Polk got on the board, at 145 pounds, when Anthony Marino scored a 7-4 overtime win over Alex Samenko. At 152 pounds, the Wolverines’ Franklin Sandoval edged the Cardinals’ Hunter Rossi. Landrum’s Heath Jordan topped Polk’s Chandler Patrick at 160 pounds, before the Cardinals’ Adam Burns earned a forfeit win.

Polk closed in, when Gabe Lail pinned Jacob Ridings at 182 pounds. The Wolverines’ Jerry Cox pinned Sam Vinsett in the 195-pound match. Polk’s Marquise Lipscomb earned a 7-2 overtime win over Ismael Bravo at 220 pounds, and at heavyweight, D.J. Twitty won by forfeit for Polk.

Both teams forfeited the 106-pound bout, while Landrum’s Erik Wiley won by forfeit at 113 pounds. Polk got those six points back, when Gabe O’Brien won by forfeit at 120 pounds. Kennon McAbee earned a forfeit win for the Cardinals, at 126. At 132 pounds, Polk’s Chase Emory defeated Wren Pierce, 11-2 for a major decision.

The Wolverines’ regular heavyweight, Chase McMurray, was sidelined by illness for the meet.

Pins by Landrum’s Wiley, McAbee, Samenko, Hunter Rossi, Heath Jordan and Vinsett gave the Cardinals all the points they needed to top East Henderson.

Landrum topped Cherokee, 45-30, with pins by Pierce, Rossi and Jordan, and a decision by Wiley.

Against East Henderson, the Wolverines got pins by Sandoval, Lail and Twitty, and decisions by Marino and Emory (major decision) to edge the Eagles, 37-33.
