Jest ‘fore Christmas
Father calls me William, sister calls me Will.
Mother calls me Willie, but the fellers call me Bill!
Mighty glad I ain’t a girl – ruther be a boy,
Without them sashes, curls, an ‘things that’s worn by Fauntleroy!
Got a yeller dog named Sport and an orange tabby cat.
Got ‘em from the shelter where all the pets are at.
Most all the time, the whole year round, there ain’t no flies on me,
But jest ‘fore Christmas we’re as good as we can be.
When I get to thinkin’ ‘bout the shelter and I get real still
Ole Sport he looks as if to say “What’s the matter Little Bill?”
I’m thinkin’ ‘bout the cats ‘n’ dogs who haven’t got a home;
It ain’t no fault of theirs they was put out jest to roam.
They’ve got food ‘n water and a cage (occasionally a bone)
But when folks come to get a pet so they have a place of their own
They go to purrin’ and a waggin,’ begging “pick me, pick me”
And jest ‘fore Christmas, they’re as good as they can be.
For Christmas, with its lots and lots of goodies, treats and toys,
Was made, they say, for proper dogs and not for naughty boys.
But shelter pets need food and shots and lots of lovin’ too.
Fuzzy balls and blankets, while they wait for homes with you.
To pay for this, the shelter says, we’re goin’ to have a ball.
But it’s pretend so you can’t come; jest send a check is all.
So, thinkin’ of all the things they’d like to see upon that tree,
Jest ‘fore Christmas be as good as you can be!
A donation helps Foothills Humane Society care for the abandoned, homeless, neglected and overlooked animals in the community, as well as reuniting lost pets and building families like Little Bill and Ole Sport.
