Area sees first signs of winter weather

Although just a trace, Polk County and the Landrum area saw the first hints of winter with a trace of ice and snow Wednesday, Nov. 27.
The snow is early for the area, with the Tryon weather station recording 3.76 inches of rain on Tuesday, Nov. 26. That weather was followed by high winds and traces of ice and snow the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Rain totals varied on Tuesday between 2 and 4 inches between Asheville and Greenville/Spartanburg, S.C., according to the National Weather Service.
Following heavy rains, some in the area awoke Wednesday to no power and slick roads from ice and snow. The Tryon Fire Department responded to a power line down on Warrior Hills Lane, as well as another power line down on Howard Gap Road Wednesday morning and a power line down on Mimosa Lane in the afternoon.
According to Duke Energy, there were 1,087 Polk County customers without power Wednesday morning. Henderson County had 1,745 customers without power.
Duke Energy’s total North Carolina and Greenville/Spartanburg, S.C. service area had 3,668 power outages Wednesday morning. A wind advisory was in effect on Wednesday until 6 p.m. for the area with northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts of 45 mph expected, according to the National Weather Service.
The forecast for Thanksgiving weekend is clear skies with a high of 43 degrees on Thanksgiving Day with winds slowing to between 5 and 7 mph in the afternoon. The low on Thanksgiving night is forecast for 26 degrees.
Friday’s forecast is for sunny skies with a high of 53 degrees and low of 28 degrees. Saturday’s forecast is also sunny with a high of 45 and low of 30, according to the National Weather Service.
