Landrum High School Boys and Girls track & field teams competed in their first 2A Region Championship meet at Liberty High School this past Thursday, April 25.

Having long been a 1A Region track and field powerhouse, the step up to 2A competition was expected to be much more challenging.

The Landrum teams faced tough competition from the other seven region schools, including long time Region 1 2A track & field favorite Pendleton High School. On paper Pendleton had the stronger teams, but the Landrum boys and girls teams performed well, capturing their first 2A region track & field titles.

The Landrum girls team racked up 190.5 points to out distance runner-up Pendleton with 161.5.  Crescent came in third with 55 points, followed by Carolina with 50, Powdersville with 48, Chesnee with 47, Blacksburg with 46 and host Liberty with 43.

Landrum’s Head Girls Coach John Sparks said, “I couldn’t be more proud of how these girls performed in the region championship.  They exceeded my expectations and show how determined they were by what they accomplished.”

Pole vaulters Alison Jouan, Shelby Morris, Ciera Belue and Paige Herbst swept the top four spots for the Landrum girls. Daisha Whitmire and Holly Rickett finished first and second in the discus throw. Carla Bruce won the girls high jump, while Maddie Jones captured the 400-meter hurdles. The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Miranda Stallings, Bruce, Belue and Sarah Cash also placed first for the Lady Cardinals.
