A second rabid skunk was found in the Pea Ridge area within days of the capture of another rabid skunk in Mill Spring.
Polk County Animal Control Officer Michael Herman said the second skunk was captured on Friday, Sept. 7 off Hwy. 108 in Pea Ridge. The first rabid animal of the year, also a skunk, was captured on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
The second skunk attacked a cat and killed some kittens in the Pea Ridge Community, Herman said. He captured the skunk and sent it to the state veterinarian lab in Raleigh, N.C. for testing and received the positive rabies results back on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
The first rabid skunk was also discovered off Hwy. 108 but in Mill Spring. The first skunk had attacked farm animals.
Herman said he is trying to schedule Sept. 22 for a rabies clinic in the Mill Spring area for both Mill Spring and Pea Ridge residents. The exact date, time and location will be publicized.
