The town has also asked Norfolk Southern, railroad owner, to allow a pedestrian crosswalk over the tracks from McCown to Trade streets.
Other phases of the downtown Streetscape project are nearing completion as Trace & Company has been implementing a new sidewalk with curb and guttering along Trade Street this week. A new intersection at Trade and New Market streets has also been completed.
“These past weeks have been incredibly gratifying,” said Armbrust. “Our long wait is finally over, and our vision is being admirably implemented. Downtown Tryon is receiving its due attention, which is good for everyone – residents and visitors alike.”
Tryon officials said the New Market project has addressed a decades-old drainage issue in front of the businesses at 75 Trade Street.
The DOT provided engineering assistance and final drawings for the upgrade, which also includes a portion of parking lot asphalting to redirect water.
The Town of Tryon and the Polk County Community Foundation’s Mary F. Kessler Fund funded the projects.
Improvement elements for the Streetscape project are drawn from the Milone & MacBroome Streetscape Master Plan, commissioned by the Tryon Downtown Development Association (TDDA).
