Sherry Carney inspired by cancer

The Singing for Soldiers event held on Jan. 13 at Sunny View Elementary collected 15 boxes of items to send to the troops fighting in Afghanistan, along with money to cover shipping costs. Performing were the Green River Boys, the Soldiers for the Cross, and Mike Upright, one of the nation’s top southern gospel vocalists. (photo submitted by James Metcalf)

During the Memorial Day 2010 Singing for Soldiers at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Columbus, Carney was interviewed by WSPA-TV and appeared on that evening news. The event made the news again last year on Memorial Day 2011.
All told, Carney’s tireless leadership generated tens of thousands of pounds of needed items (all mailed from the Mill Spring post office) and tens of thousands of dollars to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Carney lost her battle with cancer on Feb. 1, 2012. She left behind her husband, Robert; sons, Chris (Brooke) and Jason (Jerusha); three young grandsons; her mother, Glenna Sturgill Blevins; brother, Scott Blevins; sister, Sara Blevins McCawley (Michael) and many grateful soldiers.
The Singing for Soldiers events will continue in Polk County, Deb Williamson said. The next event will be Memorial Day, May 28, in the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Columbus.
