On Tuesday, April 3 at 2:30 p.m. at the Polk County Historical Museum in Columbus, Ray Christopher will speak about the geologic history of the North Carolina mountains.
Christopher taught geology at both Auburn University and Clemson University and worked as a research geologist for the U.S. government for several years.  He received the Award of Excellence for Teaching in the Sciences from Clemson University in 1999.
He said, “Geologic studies of the southern Appalachian Mountains reveal a 1.3 billion- year history that included the collision of continents, violent volcanic eruptions, massive earthquakes and the creation of mountain ranges that challenge the elevation of today’s Himalayas.”
