Polk sheriff, Tryon fire hold soup kitchen March 29

The next soup kitchen sponsored by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Tryon Fire Department will be Thursday, March 29. According to organizers, this event will have a different flavor than the two previous soup kitchens. This month’s “kitchen” will be a prepared meal boxed for delivery. Meals may be picked up at the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in Columbus from 4 – 6 p.m. on March 29.
“We really are hoping to get our churches involved,” said Kim Pack of the sheriff’s office. “We realize they have members – such as shut-ins – that could really benefit from this meal, so we hope there’s a big participation this month. Our goal is to reach as many people as possible, and we hope the partnership with our churches increases the folks we are serving. We also realize the timing is a bit different but because of the weekend activities in Tryon with the April Fools Festival, we didn’t want to have a conflicting event occurring, so the decision was made to move ours to a Thursday afternoon.”
Those wishing to pick up meals are requested to contact Pack at 828-894-3001 by 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 28 with a count of meals desired so that the proper number of meals can be plated for pick-up.
“We plan to continue this event and are always looking for new ideas,” says Pack. “With the warm weather it makes sense that a hearty meal may be a better solution than a bowl of soup, so this is an exciting opportunity for us.”
Questions about the event can also be directed to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 828-894-3001 or the Tryon Fire Department at 828-859-9335.
