Dr. J. Harrison Goodwin, assistant superintendent of administrative services for District One Schools, recently received an Honor Administrator Award from the South Carolina Music Educators Association.
Goodwin was nominated by Chapman High School Band Director Kevin Horton with the support of the music program educators in District One schools. His nomination was also endorsed through letters of support from various distinguished music educators from across the state.
“Dr. Goodwin is one of the main reasons that the music program is so successful in District One,” Horton said. “He and Superintendent Dr. Ron Garner have supported and encouraged the growth of our arts program and it shows. Our students are consistently among the best in the region and state on the competitive level of schools much larger than ours. Dr. Goodwin’s love for music and excitement for our expanding programs is contagious.  His support for not only the Chapman Marching Band, where his daughter is a member, but also each school’s respective program is felt every day. We couldn’t accomplish all that we do without him. It was an honor and a privilege to nominate him for this award.”
The fine arts program in District One offers many opportunities to the students in the community, including band, orchestra, chorus and drama programs.
“It has always been my belief that it is imperative to educate the whole student,” Goodwin said. “Our mission in District One is to provide a quality, student-centered education, and that includes academics, arts, athletics and other extracurricular programs.  It is a tremendous benefit to the students of this community to be well-rounded and I think we offer many opportunities for students to be active and involved in District One. It is a tremendous honor to have been nominated by Mr. Horton and the other music teachers in District One and to have received this recognition.”
