Tryon Fine Arts Center will present QuinTango, Washington, D.C.’s acclaimed string quintet with dancers, on the Veh Family Stage at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 10.
A quintet of two violins, cello, bass and piano, accompanied by Argentinian tango dancers, QuinTango is the only tango music group to have given a command performance at The White House and appear on NPR’s “Morning Edition” as well as CNN.
QuinTango members Joan Singer and Jennifer Rickard (violin), Phil Hosford (piano), Libby Blatt (bass) and Kerry Van Laanen (cello) will be accompanied by salon and show-style tango dancers (and married couple) Victoria Sarquisse and Federico Jorquera. The dancers will also present a master class immediately following the performance for dancers and spectators on the Veh Stage.
Intertwining a century’s worth of both classical and popular repertoire, inspired by the rhythms of tango, QuinTango brings its own interpretations to this evocative South American music, universally synonymous with the eternal dance of man and woman.
QuinTango’s performance is the foundation of several tango-related events at TFAC in early March. In addition to the master class QuinTango will give following its performance, Larry Gant of Asheville Tango will lead a lecture/demonstration called “Explore the Tango” on Thursday, March 1 as part of TFAC’s Explore the Arts Series.
According to TFAC Executive Director Beth Child, “By bringing QuinTango here, we hope to build audiences with activities surrounding the performance. The “Explore” demonstration on March 1 and the post-performance class should help more people learn about this art form than if they were just attending the performance alone.”
The QuinTango performance at TFAC is made possible in part by an “Arts in Audiences” grant from the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional funding is provided by Main Stage supporting sponsor TD Bank.
