District One Schools recently announced that Landrum High School student Anna Belue was one of the top three essay winners in the Junior Achievement Ethics Essay Contest related to ethics in healthcare.
Belue’s essay was on the subject of “Waiting for a Transplant.”
Another District One student, Alexander Palka from Chapman High School, was also among the top three winners. He wrote his essay on stem cell engineering.
In addition to these two first place winners in their respective categories, Landrum High School students Ann Louise Granger, Joshua Jones,

Lilla Keith, Brendan Taylor, Breanna Waldrop and Ethan Waldrop were finalists in the contest.
The winners will be honored at the JA Ethics Luncheon at USC Upstate’s Campus Life Center Ballroom on Thursday, Feb. 2.
In this year’s contest, 123 essays were submitted, with 30 finalist essays submitted to the judges, 10 from each issue category. One essay was chosen as winner in each category.
The judges were Debra Clements, vice president, senior general counsel, Milliken; Teddi Fishman, director, International Center for Academic Integrity, Clemson University; Vincent Gallicchio, professor of biological sciences and public health sciences, Clemson University; Chad Lawson, director, public relations, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System; and Dan Wueste, director, Rutland Institute for Ethics, Clemson University.
